The problem is what would happen to Western Springs without Speedway.

Would be a travesty to see the track closed down. All the work (At high costs) for the teams and owners to get their cars to the required sound levels only to be told "Nope still not good enough".
Seems as though because its Speedway it's got a target on its back, don' often hear complaints about inner city sports stadiums being too noisey, and then the aftermath of having thousands of drunks outside the place. It's all about the $$ in todays world thats for sure.

In my opinion, and I have had a number of people agree with me Western Springs should have been developed for the RWC final. There is a heap of space there, and its current uses (Speedway, Ponsonby Rugby Club and major concerts) could still be accommodated after the world cup.
Eden Park is very expensive and it will be under used for the amount of money spent (wasted?) on it for effectively one event.

The NZRFU wouldn't go that, not enough "glitz" for them! The RWC will end up hurting a lot of people I think, a lot of money is going in, and I can't see a massive return for a lot of the investors. AMI Stadium has been completely redeveloped, solely for rugby. The ground is now too small for any meaningful cricket, and will likely be lost from future calendars, apart from maybe some 2020.
Eden Park is the same, the new stands are shrinking the ground size.
The new Auckland Super City elections are coming soon arent they? Any of the mayoral candidates thrown their support behind the Springs yet?

My idea for Western Springs wold have been to take the toilet seat they wanted to put on the wharfs and plant it into the current Western Springs Stadium. Even if the roof was the same height as the existing light towers it would be hard to see other than from Gt North Rd in Pt Chev.

Western Springs is the icon venue for speedway but my idea instead of having the trouble with noise issues etc... approach the council for say $3-4 million and relocate speedway to waky park problem solved Do up waky park that place could be made into a very attractive venue for section 10 forms of speedway and all the classes waky park have. Run the meetings alternately say fornightly you could say have 15 meetings each and everyone would be happy. I'm sure especially the paying public who from one week to the next wouldn't have a clue when speedway is on ask joe public they wouldn't know.. only if you are a speedway nut would you know and even then i'm not sure they all do. and with the alternate meetings being every fortnight atleast speedway drivers crews the fans could also plan and have a life outside of speedway during the season and would know fromew week to week whats the haps...

I feel is should stay at the Springs, and we should fight for it ..
This report has taken 5 years in the making, I feel that it is now outdated.
If you want to upgrade Waky park, it MUST be better than what we have at the moment, with all amenities. Therefore I would see a minimum cost of $20 Million plus, to make it feasible, Remember, that Baypark was approimately $20 Million, in 2001, and it must cost more now. I heard it may be $5 Million to shift Huntly. If the council want to shift us out we need to agree on the terms and try and make them pay for the change, similar to the Rugby Union did with making the council pay for the upgrade of Eden Park, when the Union itself is only putting in $20.00 million, and now they are asking the council for a loan for the rest of the infrastructure of the stadoin. The new combined city structure may alter the outcome, but I the Manukau Park is not the right location.
It also needs to be close to the city for the walk up crowds, (deciding on the night to go)

Things Western Springs has that need to be kept if someone in there wisdom decides to move the Speedway. - Good lighting - Good parking - terraces or fixed seats - good toilet and food facilitys.
Also Western Springs has good access to public transport. Being able to catch a bus back to town may not seem like a very important thing if you live within driving distance of the track, but if you are visiting from out of town and you have come by train, aircraft or bus being able to catch a bus from the front of the track back to the city is a important consideration.
The best solution long term in my opinion is to settle the problems with the council so in 20 years we can be celebrating 100 years of speedway at Western Springs. If that cant happen for whatever reason at Western Springs, then we all have to fight to make sure we get new facility that is as good as western springs, not a paddock with a oval bulldozed into it.
RIP Shane Turner, a true legend.

I agree with both of you Selffar and TQ Crew..We cannot accept anything less than what we have at present that would be a step backwards, and no one wants that ...
Hey Selffar if it costs $20 million to upgrade Waky Park so be it, it does have the area of land that could be developed into a fantastic Stadium that everyone could be proud to attend meetings at. There is also plenty of room to have decent parking and a decent pit area that the car owners could bring their rigs into and have everything at the ready just like Bay Park. And I'm sure TQ Crew a decent bus system could be organised maybe even a free bus trip to the local train station that could work too.
All I'm doing is thinking slightly outside the square and trying to get people on the same wave length.
There will always be someone who will knock this theory down but if they only stop and think about what could be achieved out at Waky Park to make it viable for all parties concerned

I disagree with the idea of joining forces with Waikaraka Park, we all have still got the same issues - shutdown by 10.30pm and noise is the same there, lets fight for Western Springs it is the icon of Speedway in Auckland in which I have been going to for over 40yrs and when things NEED to stay they should. Just look at the response for SAVING WESTERN SPRINGS petitionsIf it leaves and goes somewhere like Hampton Downs just like Meremere Highbank how long did that last great ideas but its getting the crowds in week after week.... Speedway must stay in the Auckland region, if we can get a track out at Manukau with slightly higher decebel laws and run 20 meetings a year that would be great, if not the fight is on for Western Springs Speedway to stay for the 100+ years

Joining forces with Waky Park.... The idea i'm suggesting is to atleast get a viable place and track still in the Auckland area which is what you have requested in your post specialized1.. I don't mean for one minute we combine classes just combine as a group to use the same facility.
Petitions most of the time just become just that how many petitions do you know of that actually force action..
